These huts were used by permanent way gangs — the track maintenance workers responsible for inspecting, repairing, and maintaining the “permanent way” (the railway track, ballast, and related infrastructure).
Typical Features:
Usually small, single-room buildings built from brick, stone, or concrete.
Located at regular intervals along the line, often near signal boxes, sidings, or level crossings.
Contained tools such as jacks, shovels, picks, and sometimes a small stove for heating.
Provided shelter for track workers during breaks or bad weather.
